Ford by Dahon Convertible 7 Speed Folding Bicycle
Are you thinking about getting yourself a brand new folding bicycle to assist you with your daily commute? The Convertible by Dahon, made in partnership with Ford, might just be the bike for you. It has been designed by some of the most skilled designers of bikes in the world today and has been completely supported by the Ford Motor Company throughout production.
It is a seven speed model of folding bike. The little brother of this bike would be the Taurus 1.0, which is a single speed folding bike from Ford as well. Because this one has seven different speed settings, the ride is far easier especially on hills and inclines. It is also one of the more portable folding bikes in production today, or so the company says. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen.
That being said, this bike is a great buy for the extremely affordable price tag. The two companies have worked together perfectly to create a truly marvelous machine.
Design and Features:
This is one of the most elegant bike designs we have seen to date. No matter where your travels may take you, this machine will match the setting. It is fitted out with an entirely aluminum frame that is at the highest level in terms of durability and reliability.
It is also very comfortable to ride. You won’t feel much other than the smooth humming of the bike’s wheels on pavement when you ride it on city streets. Even if the roads are bumpy, the Convertible can handle the bumps and keep your ride comfortable throughout.
To add to the awesomeness of the ride, the derailleurs are brought into sharp focus. They are made by Shimano, one of the biggest names in the business, and perform absolutely wonderfully. The seven speeds of gearing add to the versatility of the bike. This amount is perfect for any urban commuter, as you don’t really need much to help you on what are primarily flat roads.
Height is easily adjustable too. The stem of the bike is completely extendable, so you won’t have to worry about the bike not fitting you. Just raise or lower the stem as you see fit until you have the right height for you to feel comfortable in the saddle. Just like any good convertible, this bike feels like it was built specifically for you.
Folding Mechanism and Performance
The Convertible has a truly great folding mechanism. It is the high point of the bike’s design with good reason. You can actually slow the bike down to walking speed, come to a stop, get off and fold it down in the space of a minute if you want to.
Actually folding it down only took about 10 seconds in tests. This means that the bike can be folded almost instantly. It will take you longer to get off the bike than it will to fold it away. Considering the fact that you are a commuter who is almost always in a hurry to catch the next bus or train, you are going to enjoy the space saving and other benefits offered by this bike’s folding capabilities.
Once it is folded up, the bike takes up so little space it is a wonder that you even remember it is there when your day wraps up. That’s one thing you can always be sure of with the Convertible – you can always rely on it to never get in your way as you go about your day.
If there are any downsides to this folding bike, it is the weight. While it has an aluminum frame and many other features that reduce the weight, the overall mass is still about 40lbs. This isn’t a super high value, but it is still heavier than the average weight of a folding bike. As long as you don’t plan on carrying it all over the place, though, you should be completely fine using it.
- The frame is made of a very useful aluminum alloy. This is a metal that is lightweight and resistant to most problems that plague bikes
with steel frames. In fact, the entire bike is resistant to rust. It is also very hardy, capable of withstanding some pretty intense abuse.
Amazingly smooth ride
- Because of the tensile frame design and the way the suspension works, the Convertible will keep you bump-free for the duration of your commute.
- Shifting through the different gear combinations on the Dahon are easier to do than with most other bikes. Shimano does an incredible job on every one of its component designs, and this one is no exception to this rule.
- The bike can be folded down in about ten seconds. You don’t even have to remove any of the parts to make this happen!
- One of the only gripes that we have about this bike is the weight. The bike isn’t too heavy, but it is still heavier than what you would expect a bike of this size and price to weigh. As long as you don’t plan on taking it with you everywhere while lifting it, you should be okay. However, if you are someone who has to carry the bike everywhere they go, you may want to look into lighter models.
There is very little in the way of negatives that can be said about the Dahon Convertible. It is a little heavy, but that is just about it. In the other departments, it rocks the socks off of anyone who rides and uses it. Overall, this is one of the best folding bikes on the market for people who commute to work quite often and for those who ride for leisure too. It has one of the best names for a folding bike, especially because the name suits the bike very well indeed! We truly loved using it, and we know for a fact that you will enjoy it too.
